D’Monic Intent & Syre Solo Show N.Z.F.W.

The show that I never miss is D’Monic Intent, this group of couture designers does not do off the rack, neither do they play it safe and we were not disappointed for their first well deserved debut solo show at New Zealand Fashion Week 2015 with a resume that boosts a list of awards dating back to 2007 for Villa Maria Cult Couture, Westfield Style Pasifika, Miromoda and the Hokonui Fashion Design Awards.

Maori fashion designers D’Monic Intent from Nga Puhi and Ngati Mainapoto are an Auckland family based fashion label of Maxine Woolridge, Kris Leitch and Samara Woolridge and brother-in-law Joe Walker had only 2 months to prepare for their show which also features their own fine jewellery, accessories and millinery.

D’Monic Intents innovative show was located in The Tent with it’s trestle seats that are typically school hall kiwiana and solid lighting and the sound pumping out Marilyn Manson and Tool, while I nibbled on the The Honest Food Company protein bars!

The hard metallic gold mesh against rich deep blue velvet, quilted bronzes highlighted with orange, and silver futuristic alien silver fabrics just took over the catwalk as each piece demanded to be seen on it’s on and later as a collection that seamlessly worked together as a whole collection.

With the theme having a religious overtone in the form of nuns habits and uniforms and stand out models appearing ghost like struggling down the catwalk all part of an unconventinal act that one could not pull there eyes away from!

The models were locals characters used to show the garments with the overall comment being that the crowd could envisage themselves in the garments as a result of using relateable models of all ages.

Black and reds have always been a favorite theme with the previous years kimonos redesigned into nuns floor length dresses and the Japanese influence sneaking through into the hair and makeup.

I loved the hair by Emma Bryce of Stepthen Marr, with the messy deconstructed fishtail braid down the back and huge backcombed side french rolls with loads of texture.

The makeup by Mac was not for the faint hearted with a pale foundation and geisha lips working well, but the hot red eye colour is not the most complementary on any human, this one is for stage only.

SYRE 17-year-old designer  Aaliyah Jobe’s collection of punk and Gothic street wear dominated by black with emerald green and white featuring were reminiscent of the designer 1990’s punks with screen printed logos, low crotches for skater punks, crisp structured shirts with simple monochromatic lines, the men’s wear was a stand out.

The North Shore Punks and Designer Gothics will be scraping to purchase every piece for their wardrobes and for those of you that are more off the rack simply take one piece you love and dress it down.
